Ducking out on Freedom of Speech
January 25, 2014

After the "patriarch" of the Duck Dynasty family was suspended by A&E for expressing his views about homosexuality and other matters in a GQ interview, there was an outpouring of liberal sentiment that the First Amendment concept of Free Speech does not cover speech that those commentators consider to be 'hateful' or to be likely to produce results they would oppose. They need to re-read the First Amendment.

When the desired outcome becomes more important than the principle involved (i.e. the end justifies the means) I hope they remember that they are invoking the same logic that Dick Cheney used in defending waterboarding. The difference is no longer one of moral or ethical principle, but of which side wins.

Aren't we getting a little tired of that? We now have an administration that seems to believe that it's ok if last week's justification contradicts this week's, because the point is to win. For The American People, of course.

p.s.   In case anyone wonders, I disagree with the Duck Dynasty guy, and as far as Dick Cheney is concerned, let's declassify the interrogation logs like he suggested, and see if he's right.
